The castle Reichenstein's beginnings trace all the way back to the early 11th century: emperors, electors, bishops and robber knights play their roles here. Although it was destroyed several times, it was always rebuilt because of its excellent strategic meaning.

In the 13th century the castellans belonged to the notorious knight robbers. That's why the emperor Rudolf from Habsburg called to help. He was able to starve the castle after a 4-year siege in 1282 Dietrich from Hohenfels, lord on castle Reichenstein, was taken captive and was beheaded at the very old Clemens chapel. The saga from the man without a head comes from this time...

At about 1290 the castle then came to the dukes of Bavaria, who used it as a method of force in the fight for the German emperor crown.

In 1344 the emperor decided that the castle Reichenstein should belong in ownership of the archbishopric Mainz.

It's meaning as a fortress gradually went lost with the perfectioning of the fire weapons. The owners changed several times, the castle decayed, until it was rebuilt as a living residence of the Kirsch-Puricellis, one of the richest noble and industrial families of Europe in the year 1899. With its furnishing, with its collections, the castle Reichenstein still portrays an important example of German history and rhenish culture.

The castle museum on castle Reichenstein is presumably opened from March 1 to November 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
